Copain Monument Tree Pinot Noir Review
So I've been saving a specific bottle of wine to enjoy with my wife since my first trip to Napa and Sonoma after starting Uncorked Ventures, a Copain 2007 Monument Tree Pinot Noir. I believe I've talked a little about Copain before in this space, but I am a fan of much of the wine they make and their winemaker Wells Guthrie. He has a rather unique style for the area and has really been at the forefront of pushing other winemakers to attempt to control the alcohol levels in their wine. Much of the wine that Copain makes ends up with alcohol content 1-2% lower then the competition. They're able to do this by being very careful about where they source their grapes (usually colder climates)[..]

Yadkin Valley Wine Bar
I recently found myself having to do a bit of travelling for work, and during this trek I ended up with a fairly long layover in Charlotte International Airport (thanks mainly to weather ... why do light drizzles of rain cause so much trouble). Normally I dread long layovers, especially when they aren't planned, but Charlotte is one place where I don't tend to mind so much thanks to a wonderful find. This little gem I'm talking about is the Yadkin Valley Wine Bar right there in the airport, which is truly a home away from home for any wine lover. To begin, the bar itself is just a great looking and friendly place that anyone can enjoy. Besides that, the wines themselves that are within[..]

Pear Valley Winery - Visit Winery Number 3 Paso Robles
Not to far down the way from Bianchi's winery was Pear Valley winery and tasting room. As we drove up a few things were really impressive. First, the "newly" constructed stoned faced winery and tasting room just screamed class. The second thing that struck us was the view. As we drove up we noticed the winery was slightly elevated so this afforded you views all the way around the valley. We got out of the tour van and headed inside. As we opened the door to the tasting room we were meet by Kathleen, we soon found out she was called K2 because the "Owners" name was also Kathleen. Gift Idea - A Personally Chauffeured Winery Tour
One of the best birthday presents I ever received was a hand-made certificate from my sister-in-law offering to take me and my husband on a tour of wineries in our area. We could have made the tour on our own, of course. Or we could have signed up for a tour conducted by one of the bus companies that specialize in that kind of thing. But having my husband's sister draw up the itinerary and do the driving, too, made it extra special. We started out early in the morning with a list of six potential wineries to visit. Of course, we never made it to all of them. One hadn't opened for the day yet when we arrived, and others were spread out over three or four different counties. Nevertheless,[..]

Copain Winery Monument Tree Pinot Noir
Thomas Fogarty Pinot Noir '06
Tonight we opened a bottle of Thomas Fogarty Pinot Noir '06. This wine was given to us by an acquaintance. We decided to have it with our dinner. We took advantage of the beautiful evening and Ron volunteered to BBQ. As we sat outside overlooking our surroundings I thought how appropriate that we are sampling a Santa Cruz Mountain Wine, perfect for this evening "..." while we sit in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This winery was founded in 1981 by Dr. Thomas Fogarty, a Stanford cardiovascular surgeon. It sits 2000 feet above sea level with amazing views as far as San Francisco bay. We drive this drive all the time and I always look over to this beautiful winery. This winery produces[..]
David Lett, the Father of Oregon Pinot Noir
Oregon wine country would be a drastically different place without David Lett. In 1967 Lett and his wife bought a 20 acre farm which would soon become Eyrie Vineyards and proceeded to replace the prune farm with a combination of European grapes. David thought that the more challenging growing conditions in Oregon would lead to wines with more finesse and complexity then was typically found in other new world producers in California, Chile and Australia. He thought, much like the French chateau owners that grapes grown in ideal conditions could never have to work to ripen and achieve the type of elegant wine that is so typical of wine from Burgundy and the great Bordeaux's. Having[..]

Last week's wine came from a groundbreaking California winemaker, Robert Mondavi. This review is devoted to a wine made by a famous French winemaker, Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Prior to their death, these two giants collaborated; their most famous joint effort is the very pricey and probably overpriced Opus One, a Cabernet Sauvignon. Today's wine is a Pinot Noir from the up and coming Languedoc region of southwestern France. While Pinot Noir is a common and often prized red grape variety grown in many parts of France it is somewhat of a newcomer to this major, but not prestigious wine growing region. So let's see what happens when we combine a great grape, an up-and-coming wine[..]
Review - Aquinas Napa Valley Pinot Noir 06'
Tonight we decided after a late lunch to just have a glass of wine on its own rather than pairing with a meal. We pulled a wine someone had given us, Aquinas Napa Valley Pinot Noir 06'. This wine does not have much history however, "3 loose screws" a division of Don Sebastiani & Sons produce many wines you have heard of such as Smoking Loon & Pepperwood to name a few. Their family has a wonderful history and they have achieved much success since 1895. We pulled the synthetic cork and let it breathe a short while... The color was a beautiful transparent ruby red. The nose was full of fruit and earth. Cherries are evident, tart raspberries and smoked earth as well. The first taste[..]
My Top Three Pinot Noir Flavours of the Month
When I am asked what my favourite pinot noir currently is, I am thrown into as much confusion about what to pick as Ferrari Formula One driver - Kimmi Raikkonen must be about which Pit-Stop bunny to choose to spray him in champagne when he wins a race. There really are just too many to pick only one... If Kimmi and I had our collective backs to the wall on the issue - I, for one would probably pick something from Victoria in Australia and something from the South Island of New Zealand, just to balance out the scales. Show me one Pinot and I will show you something just a little different from the next, but the basic characteristics of Pinot in the new world are either:- (A) Cherry, cedar[..]
